Q&A Project Management Careers: The Universal PM

Why, when we promote the idea of the ‘Universal PM’ are PMs still asked for domain and technical experience? There are a whole host of reasons why organisations are still locked into the idea that project managers must have specific experience in their sector, domain, product etc. We would like to think that it is all about the perceived increased risk of hiring “unknown” PMs. It can be a risky business hiring on strong leadership skills; excellent project management discipline and motivating a team of specialists – technical or otherwise to get the best out of them. Tongue-in-cheek aside, the risk or even fear of hiring the wrong PM, which can have a devastating effect on the bottom line, is enough to steer hirers to safer bets.   There is also still a lack of understanding about the project management disciple across many organisations. Organisations will believe that “their” projects and the way they manage them are unique to them, they will stipulate – through tried and tested experience – what works for them and this will include sector and technical related abilities.
