Q&A Project Management Careers – PMO Career Path

I’m currently working within a Programme Management Office (PMO) and I’m undecided about where to take my career – stay within PMO or move into a project delivery role. What are the pros and cons of each? For PMO professionals this is a common crossroad in their career development. On the one hand some will always prefer to stay within the PMO because they see it as a much more exciting and varied role from that of a project manager. Others believe that the PMO is just a stepping stone to become more delivery focused and enjoy the opportunities that project managing can bring. If you decide to move to a more delivery focused role, first as a Project Manager here are some of the positives to doing so: You have already received great experience in the processes, tools and techniques in project management through working within the PMO – this should make the initial steps into a delivery role a little easier Moving into a delivery role will help you to develop more of the ‘people-orientated’ management skills that you will need if you want to progress in project management for e.g., leadership, team management, negotiation and decision-making. A more visible delivery role will mean more accountability and responsibility A delivery role will allow you to broaden your horizons by having the opportunity to work on different types of projects and with different teams With increased experience, skills and responsibilities comes the opportunity to increase your earning power Finally, in the future you can still consider a return to the PMO.
