Better Business Cases – What You Need to Know

Last week, APMG launched their latest product in the project management suite of best practice – Better Business Cases (BBC) Better Business Cases™ is a systematic and objective approach to all stages of the business case development process that sits alongside, and complements, HM Treasury’s Green Book guidance. The guidance, course and examination are aimed at Senior Responsible Officers (SROs), programme, project managers, those in procurement, in fact anyone wanting to get better at creating business cases which form the basis for projects. The new guidance comes from a joint initiative between the UK and Welsh Treasury departments – who have used the principles of BBC for over five years already. You can read more about its origins by taking a look at the Green Book guidance . The course and examination are based on The Five Case Model , the UK government’s best practice approach to planning spending proposals and enabling effective business decisions. At the launch, BBC was hailed as a framework to enable “better thinking” and “better decision-making” during the business case process so let’s take a quick look at what forms the Five Case Model: The strategic case– strategic fit and clear investment objectives The economic case – optimising value for money The commercial case – attractiveness to the market and procurement arrangements The financial case – affordability The management case – deliverability and plans for deliver There is further guidance and templates available through the Welsh Government website, take a look The BBC has been created to bring together published guidance but more importantly create a training course (2 days Foundation level) for those that need that kind of learning and development. Interestingly the BBC will not be mandated within the public sector although there is an expectation that those closely aligned to business case creation should pursue this training.
