“Preparing shock, move away from the patient! “ What the? The sound was muffled by the partially closed door to my office. I shoved open the door of my office to see what was going on. And promptly wished I was still in the quarterly business review being grilled by the CFO. A massive gorilla was kneeling in the center of my office. His massive torso obscured my view of what was beyond him

We’re bringing the Arras People Podcast even more in house now! Each month, you’ve counted on the AP Podcast for a simple, free and easily compact delivery of Project Management Tipoffs and – more recently – the Careers Advice podcast. Now at the Camel, we’re proud to bring the AP Podcast directly on board in a once amonth post dedicated to your faithful downloading capabilities. In this month’s pod (Episode 27 if you’re counting at home), we wanted to know how universities are contributing to the project management profession and understand which areas of PM are currently hot in academia. In this issue we have leading UK universities telling us about their interests in project management. We have stuff from… Cranfield School of Management Two leading contributors from Cranfield ( Dr Neil Turner, a Senior Research Fellow in Programme and Project Management; Dr Liz Lee-Kelley, a Senior Lecturer in Programme and Project Management ) offered a strong case study for best master planning through lessons learned and strong candidate placement. The case study tackled the London 2012 Olympics, and the keys to good master planning, preparation, identifying quality individuals, and combining knowledge of business, technical and individual processes to deliver effectively.

“Social media is the word-of-mouth on steroids.” Dana Pethia Yesterday I attended a Small Business Event hosted by Constant Contact and the Thurston Chamber . I had signed up specifically to hear Dana Pethia and to learn more about Constant Contact as an email service for Professional Project Services and a couple of professional organizations that I support. What I came away with was also a wealth of best practices in email and social media marketing to share with my consultant and small business friends. Having an email list allows you to send information to those that have indicated an interest. Email is a way to establish a relationship with the customer and let them know your services, accomplishments, and ways you can help them. It keeps you visible so that they remember you and your services. Email has an added benefit of being easy to forward making it easier for subscribers to refer you to their friends.

Arras People wanted to understand more about project management in today’s universities in the UK and spoke with Dr Walter Mswaka about the University of Huddersfield’s approach. Whilst the university are doing a fine job in teaching and promoting project management both as an academic subject and a practical course ( for postgraduate and undergraduate students), they are also conscious of ensuring courses relate to the real world. Project Management is a specialist course within the MSc Management suite with the overarching aim of equipping students with a sound grasp of the key concepts, theories and issues which pervade the field of project management. I’ve previously written about how keen I am to see the management part of the project manager’s title given more prominent so it’s great to see this strong link in education. The university’s Business School has also got closer to the industry’s professional body in the UK and has also become an accredited provider of the Association of Project Management (APM) certificates. Building strong local connections with the APM not only gives students access to local meetings and talks but also the opportunity to mingle with practicing PMs and pick up new insights in discussions. The APM also sponsors their ‘Best MSc Business Project Management dissertation” each year, which is a boost for a student picking up this prize. The most popular course is the MSc Business Project Management which attracts a variety of professionals and overseas students. As I said earlier, the university is conscious that courses have to include the real work element and as a university this has to be a constant focus.

You need a thick skin to be a project manager. Don’t expect to be adored . If you do the job well you’ll get some colleagues’ (often very senior colleagues’) hackles up by probing into areas where things may be going pear shaped. Don’t expect any thanks . You’ll end up doing all sorts of tasks from writing business cases to arranging tea and coffee for meetings and everything in between. You may be disappointed if you’re expecting any thanks for this stuff, even when the jobs you are completing are outside of your remit. Don’t expect others to treat you as you treat them . You may have an internal code of conduct that says something like, ‘ I will never bitch about someone else without first taking the issue up with them directly in a diplomatic kind of way ‘. Not everyone shares your values, and you may find colleagues sharing their opinions of you with your boss without them first addressing their concerns to you! If you do your job well, nothing will go wrong and people will assume the PM role is easy and possibly superfluous. Conversely, if you make a dogs dinner of it, you can wow colleagues with your calmness under pressure and heroic, stoic side

Just over a week ago I ran my first marathon. It was an unseasonably hot and humid day and a very challenging course – especially for a first time marathoner like me. It is uncertain if delirium drove me to crazy thoughts, or if the extreme effort gave me incredible clarity of mind such that I was temporarily transformed into a great philosopher contemplating the similarities between endurance events and project management. Either way, I think I had some pretty good ideas while I was out there so, crazy or not, I am going to share them with the world! My first musings on management started at about mile 9. I had just finished about 3 miles of uphill climb, the last mile of which was very steep and purported to be the toughest part of the course. It was very tough but it was also one of the most enjoyable parts of the run for me.
